As I sit in my desert garden on a beautiful spring morning at Harmony Motel near Joshua Tree National Park, I watch the amazing activity of the desert’s wildlife. A refreshing cool breeze and the warm desert sunshine gently touch my skin, instantly rejuvenating my spirit. Spring is my favorite season of the year, bringing new life, vibrant colors, and a renewed appreciation for the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert.
Spring in the desert has a playful personality. One day it greets you with gentle breezes and brilliant sunshine, and the next it surprises you with cool temperatures, soft rain, overcast skies, or gusty winds that temporarily interrupt your outdoor adventures.
As the season unfolds, the Mojave Desert comes alive with bright greens, vibrant purples, warm pinks, oranges, and yellows as wildflowers begin to bloom across the landscape. Fresh green grasses appear, fragrant blossoms perfume the air, hummingbirds dart from flower to flower, families of California quail wander through the desert, and protective mourning doves carefully watch over their nests high in the trees.
t Harmony Motel, my desert garden becomes a gathering place for many of my favorite desert visitors. Roadrunners, quail, hummingbirds, doves, and other native wildlife fill the gardens with movement and song after the long, dry winter. Their cheerful activity makes it seem as though they are joyfully greeting old friends and celebrating the arrival of another beautiful Mojave Desert spring.
