History of Harmony Motel
This roadside refuge, founded in 1952, it offers a simple rustic elegance, comfortable rooms with loads of history. Whether it is travelers coming to visit the Joshua Tree National Park area, rock band U2 shooting their album cover, or folks just passing through, our visitors find Harmony Motel warm and welcoming.
Perhaps notable in Harmony Motel’s unique history is its memorable name (Harmony) and striking red sign, with theatrical music notes. The historic sign has attracted travelers for decades to this quaint lodging. It is this unique signage that attracted pop legends, U2 during the photoshoot for their groundbreaking album U2: The Joshua Tree. World famous photographer, Anton Corbijin, did a photo shoot with the sign as a backdrop. when, U2 visited the Harmony in 1987!
Other Notable Visitors
Subsequently, in more recent times, Harmony Motel has been host to the very popular pop group Snow Patrol who used the motel as inspiration for many of their songs.
Additionally, Harmony Motel has also welcomed many Hollywood film crews during their film shoots. Film crews took lodging at Harmony for Crazy Beautiful and Route 66, both filmed in and around Joshua Tree National Park.

When you arrive for your stay, “U2” will understand why Harmony is the perfect location for artistic inspiration from its dramatic visual beauty. Many types of artists have adopted the Harmony as a desert home away from home…musicians, painters, and actors. Original works from local artists appear in the rooms and on the grounds. In some cases, the artwork is a creation that becomes the décor of the space a small sculpture that glows in the sunset.
